Trademarks are at the heart of every brand’s identity, protecting the symbols, names, and logos that distinguish companies in a crowded marketplace. Effective trademark prosecution, from filing applications to handling office actions and ultimately securing registrations, is vital for businesses seeking to safeguard their intellectual property and maintain a competitive edge.

To bring clarity to this landscape, the Patexia Trademark Intelligence Report 2025 takes a comprehensive look at trademark prosecution across the United States. Drawing on five years of data covering filings, outcomes, and stakeholders, the report highlights key trends and sheds light on the forces impacting the field. While it covers companies, attorneys, and other stakeholders, in this article, we turn the spotlight on the law firms that stand out as the most active and most successful in managing trademark filings.

Trademark Filing Trends (2020–2024)

Trademark filings reached their highest levels at the start of the period, with more than 693,000 applications in 2020 and 684,000 in 2021. Activity then saw a sharp decline in 2022, dropping to just over 551,000 filings, before stabilizing in 2023 at a similar level. In 2024, filings recovered to nearly 597,000, though still below the early-pandemic highs observed in 2020 and 2021.

Overall, the data suggests that trademark prosecution has remained strong despite short-term fluctuations, with filing volumes consistently above half a million applications each year. As we have demonstrated in earlier insights, these swings are often linked to filings originating from China, which have shown sharp rises and declines over the years.

Top One Percent: Most Active and Best-Performing Firms

During the report’s period of study, the USPTO examined 2,738,833 trademark applications, issuing 1,672,553 registrations and recording 1,066,330 abandonments, resulting in an average registration rate of 64.87%. In total, 3,039,838 trademark applications were filed, 428,211 marks were renewed, and 953,616 were canceled. With this broader filing activity in mind, it is equally important to recognize the key stakeholders driving trademark prosecution. Law firms, in particular, play a central role in advising clients, managing portfolios, and guiding applications through the USPTO. To highlight their impact, the Trademark Intelligence Report 2025 ranks law firms based on both activity and performance, showcasing those that stand out as leaders in the field.

Methodology Snapshot

The rankings presented in this report are based on a proprietary methodology designed to measure the activity, success, and overall performance of companies, law firms, and attorneys in trademark prosecution. Our process begins with extensive data cleaning and entity name resolution to ensure accuracy, followed by the extraction of key metrics such as applications filed, registrations obtained, office actions, oppositions, and pendency. Success and performance scores are calculated as weighted combinations of these signals, then normalized using a regression model to account for external factors like examiner influence or client complexity. By evaluating activity over a five-year period and focusing on the top 10,000 most active entities, this approach provides a rigorous, data-driven assessment of long-term performance.
